Mayor Turner Proclaims the First Wednesday of October ‘Energy Efficiency Day’ in the City of Houston

October 6, 2021 -- Mayor Turner celebrated Wednesday, October 6 as 2021 Energy Efficiency Day, and encouraged residents and businesses to join the City of Houston in supporting clean energy goals for a more energy efficient future. Implementing energy efficiency measures is the cheapest, fastest, and cleanest way to reduce Houston’s energy demand.

“Recognizing that we build resilience across multiple scales – neighborhood, City, and region – we can all play our individual part at home to make our communities stronger and more prepared for the future,” indicated Mayor Turner.  “The economic and environmental benefits achieved through energy efficiency measures are significant for the Houston region.”

During the winter storm in February, Texans from Houston to El Paso learned how the state—residents and businesses alike—must work to relieve stress on the power grid infrastructure. Working toward the goals of the Climate Action Plan and Resilient Houston, the Offices of Sustainability, Resilience, and Complete Communities are working with various City departments to explore the implementation of microgrid systems, expand weatherization programs, and further partnerships with energy companies to serve the most vulnerable.  “We must develop solutions to address a climate change, ensure a just and equitable energy transition, and promote economic growth in an inclusive and transparent manner.” said Laura Patiño, Interim Chief Resilience Officer.

The Mayor wants all Houstonians to know that they can join in the celebration as well. By turning off unnecessary lights, switching to LED lightbulbs, weatherizing windows and doors, and having their HVAC systems assessed, Houstonians and business owners can save energy and money. In addition, residents can check with their energy providers for renewable energy plans that promote the use of solar or wind energy.
