Charges have been filed against an armed suspect shot by a Houston police officer at 1310 Riverview Circle about 11:45 p.m. on Saturday (July 30).
The suspect, Bryan Stuart Cornitius, 38, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant in the 174th State District Court. A booking photo of Cornitius, who remains hospitalized, is not available for release at this time. Officer V. Nguyen, who discharged his weapon, was not injured. He was sworn in as an officer in May 2021 and is assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division. HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Glover and Detectives I. Ulloa, S. Mohajer and A. Henderson reported: Officers were dispatched to a disturbance call involving an individual in crisis at the above address. While en route, officers were informed the individual was a suspect (Cornitius) armed with a knife. The officers arrived and were immediately approached by the suspect, who appeared to be very agitated and was armed with a knife. The officers gave verbal commands to the suspect to drop the knife and not approach them, but the suspect refused to comply and continued to approach officers. The officers backed up to create distance from the suspect while still giving him commands to drop the knife. The suspect then charged one of the officers with the knife. The officer, V. Nguyen, discharged his duty weapon more than once and struck the suspect. Officers provided emergency medical care to the suspect until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported the male to a local hospital in critical condition. The suspect was subsequently charged in the incident and remains in custody at a hospital. As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
