Suspect Arrested, Charged in Shooting Incident at 1901 Taylor Street

Charges have been filed against a robbery suspect who fired shots at Houston police officers at 1901 Taylor Street about 4:05 p.m. on Tuesday (August 16).

The suspect, Ismel Jamal Birden, 34, is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, aggravated robbery and unlawful carrying of a weapon in the 230th State District Court.  A booking photo of Birden is attached to this news release.

No HPD officers were injured or discharged their duty weapons in this incident.

HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Detectives A. Velasquez and A. Barker reported:

HPD patrol officers were searching for a suspect who fled a robbery scene at the above address.  The suspect, Birden, was located in the area of Taylor Street and the Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) service road.  When officers approached Birden, he fired a gun in their direction.  The gunfire struck a patrol vehicle at least once.  Birden then fled on foot.

A short time later, Birden was arrested in the 2300 block of White Oak Boulevard without further incident.  The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was consulted and Birden was subsequently charged with several felonies.
