In a positive crime summary report to Houston City Councilmembers today (May 3), Houston Police Chief Troy Finner shared that violent crime in the City of Houston is down by 12 percent and overall crime is down six percent compared to the same time period one year ago.
The city’s murder rate is down 27 percent compared to this same time last year. Unofficially, the city has recorded 111 murders in the first four months of the year, compared to 153 in the first four months of 2022.
“The numbers speak for themselves and we continue to see them trending down,” said Chief Finner. “I want to thank the residents of our city and the great work of our men and women in uniform, as well as our support staff. I also want to thank the collaborative effort that we have with our local, state and federal partners,” added Chief Finner.
The Chief also thanked Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Houston City Council for their support. He specifically highlighted the Mayor’s “One Safe Houston” program, which included the overtime funding of 125 additional officers per day, enhanced use of technology and specialized trained personnel to respond to domestic violence and mental health calls.
Chief Finner also reiterated that while he is pleased with the progress, there is still work to be done. He emphasized the need for continued effort from the community to report suspicious activity or information on any crimes that occur.
