Please attribute the following statement to Mayor Sylvester Turner.

“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a bright light in our country and a fierce advocate for equality. She fought for women’s rights and for the rights of all groups that have been disenfranchised.

“Throughout the years, she served on the nation’s highest court with intellect, compassion, and conviction. She stood on the right side of history and consistently demonstrated her profound belief that all people are equal and deserve fair treatment based on the law.

“Her death is a heartbreaking loss to our country. Not only was she a revered Supreme Court justice, but her entire life was also a testament to the American dream.

“And even while she had her health challenges, Justice Ginsburg proved to be highly resilient. She worked until the end because she recognized the importance of her position. She pressed forward despite her health challenges because she knew so many of us depended on her presence.

“The American people should have the final say on her replacement. Those who mourn her death must also commit to carrying the torch to uphold our nation’s democracy in Justice Ginsburg’s memory.”
