Houston police are investigating an incident in which an HPD officer discharged his duty weapon at a wanted felony suspect at 8430 Antoine Drive about 11:35 a.m. on Monday (April 15).
The suspect, Periche Roshal Barley, 18, is charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer in the 488th State District Court. A booking photo of Barley is attached to this news release.
HPD Sergeant I. Gallagher, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Sergeant Gallagher is assigned to the North Belt Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in April 2008.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant F. Lee and Detectives V. Lewis and M. Estep reported:
HPD North Belt Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team officers and HPD Homicide Division detectives were actively searching for Barley, charged in the Feb. 21 fatal shooting of a man at 13611 Ella Boulevard. Officers arrived at an apartment complex at the above address and located Barley in the parking lot.
Officers approached Barley and gave him repeated verbal commands and attempted to take him into custody. Barley ignored commands and pointed a weapon at officers. Fearing for their safety, Sergeant Gallagher discharged his duty weapon at Barley, who was not struck by the gunfire. Barley surrendered and was taken into custody.
As this incident occurred in the Harris County limits, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office will be the lead agency in this investigation.
As is customary when an HPD officer discharges his duty weapon at a suspect, the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division are conducting an administrative investigation.
