Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect who fired a shot at an HPD officer at 2501 Lazy Hollow Drive about 6 p.m. on Wednesday (March 2).
The identity of the deceased male, 18, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. Sergeant K. Canales, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Sergeant Canales was sworn in as an HPD officer in September 2009 and is assigned to the Gang Division. HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant Hekimian and Detectives N. Arellano, V. Nguyen and W. Elliott reported: Officers were conducting surveillance on a wanted suspect and observed the male leave his apartment at the above address and walk to a nearby business. As the suspect was walking back to his apartment, officers attempted to take him into custody. As an HPD sergeant made contact with the suspect, the male produced a weapon and fired a shot toward the sergeant. The sergeant then discharged his weapon and struck the suspect. Paramedics pronounced the suspect deceased. No officers were injured. As is customary with HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits that result in an injury, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
