Houston police are awaiting autopsy results in a death in custody incident that occurred in the 11000 block Sageleaf Lane about 8:45 a.m. on Sunday (April 28).
The identity and cause of death of the man, 38, are pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives H. Le, D. Hammons and M. Childs reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a public lewdness call at the above address and found the man acting erratically. Officers observed the male ingest a substance believed to be narcotics. As officers tried to detain the combative male, he resisted arrest and suffered a cut to his leg after kicking and breaking a glass window. Officers deployed their conducted energy devices (Tasers) and detained the male.
Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene to treat the male’s leg injury. During treatment the male became unresponsive and paramedics transported him to an area hospital where doctors pronounced him deceased.
As is customary in an in-custody death, the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division are conducting an administrative investigation.
