Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman and a second shooting incident involving a Harris County Precinct 7 deputy and an armed suspect at 6019 Almeda Road about 12:35 a.m. today (May 7).
The identity of the deceased female victim, 44, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The Harris County Precinct 7 Deputy Constable, who discharged his duty weapon, was not seriously injured.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant D. Lane and Detectives J. Montalvo, W. Elliott and O. Flores reported:
The female victim and an unidentified male suspect were involved in an altercation at a gas station at the above address. The suspect, armed with a handgun, chased the victim inside the store and then back outside. While running through the gas pumps, the suspect fired multiple shots at the victim, striking her. The suspect continued to shoot as the victim fell.
Houston Fire Department personnel witnessed the incident and alerted the deputy, who was driving by. The deputy attempted to stop the suspect from fleeing in a vehicle driving westbound on North McGregor Way. Shortly after passing through the intersection of North McGregor Way and Almeda Road, the suspect stopped his vehicle, got out and began shooting towards the deputy. The deputy moved to a safer location and returned fire.
The suspect then entered the deputy’s patrol vehicle, drove westbound on North McGregor Way, turned around and drove eastbound and eventually returned to his original vehicle. The suspect exited the patrol vehicle and engaged the deputy in another exchange of gunfire. The suspect then ran to his vehicle and fled the scene westbound on North McGregor Way.
The deputy was not struck by gunfire, but sustained a minor injury and was transported to an area hospital
It is believed the suspect was also not struck by gunfire.
The suspect’s vehicle was later recovered at North Loop East (North Interstate Highway 610 East) and Kirkpatrick Road.
At this time, the suspect has not been positively identified.
As is customary when a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon in the Houston city limits, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit.
