Senior Police Officer S. Nguyen, 41, and Officer C. Eko, 33, both suffered stab wounds and were transported to Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center Hospital. Officer Nguyen was sworn in as an officer in August 2008 and is assigned to the Westside Patrol Division. Officer Eko, who discharged his duty weapon, is assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in May 2019.
HPD Special Investigation Unit Sergeant R. Flores and Officers R. Anderson, V. Lewis and N. Arellano reported:
Officers responded to a welfare check at the above address where a male was reported to be in crisis. Officers located the male and attempted to deescalate the situation. As officers attempted to detain the male, the male produced a knife and was able to stab Officers Nguyen and Eko. Officer Eko, in fear of this safety and for the safety of his fellow officers, discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect.
Paramedics pronounced the male suspect deceased at the scene. Officers Nguyen and Eko were transported to the hospital where they were treated and released.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Specials Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
