Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed robbery suspect by an HPD officer at 100 Eastwood Street about 5:10 p.m. on Thursday (February 29).
The identity of the suspect is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Officer A. Yanez, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Officer Yanez is assigned to the Eastside Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in December 1993.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant E. Wohlgemuth and Detective D. Escobar, C. Walker and N. Barnes reported:
Eastside patrol officers responded to two robberies in the area that were close to each other and had the same suspect description. Officers searched the surrounding area in an attempt to locate the suspect, who was said to be riding an electric scooter. While driving in his patrol vehicle, Officer Yanez located a male matching the suspect’s description and followed the suspect to the above address, where he pulled his patrol vehicle in front of the suspect and exited the vehicle. The suspect then fled on foot, with Officer Yanez pursuing him on foot.
The suspect ran behind a tree as Officer Yanez gave verbal commands to stop. While behind the tree, the suspect produced a pistol and fried shots at Officer Yanez. Officer Yanez returned fire. The suspect then attempted to flee a second time but collapsed a short distance away. Officer Yanez provided medical assistance to the suspect until Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
