Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 6100 Bellfort Avenue about 1:25 a.m. today (April 4).
The identity of the deceased male, 34, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Fendia and Officer C. Sartor reported:
HPD Southeast Patrol officers observed a green Mercedes-Benz C-Class run a red light at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Bellfort and Cullen Boulevard. Officers attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the suspect refused to stop. Officers then initiated a vehicle pursuit.
As the suspect approached the intersection of Bellfort and South Wayside Drive, the vehicle left the main lanes and traveled into a ditch separating the east and westbound lanes on Bellfort. The vehicle then struck a manhole in the ditch and flipped, ejecting the suspect. The vehicle came to a stop in the intersection of Bellfort and South Wayside. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
