Houston police are investigating the death of a man at 1401 St. Joseph Parkway about 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 21).
The man is identified as Anthony Simmons, 32. His manner and cause of death are pending an autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Ynosencio and Detectives J. Kosler, O. Flores, T. Vaca and V. Praxedes reported: Baytown Police Department officers arrested Mr. Simmons on Tuesday (Feb. 20) for theft and transported him to the Harris County Joint Processing Center (JPC) to be booked on the misdemeanor charge. However, once arriving to the JPC, Simmons was rejected by jail personnel at approximately 10 a.m. and transported by officers to Ben Taub General Hospital for medical clearance. About 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 21), Simmons was released from the hospital and transported back to the JPC to be processed. Later that day, about 9:45 p.m., Simmons requested “withdrawal” medication from Harris County Jail personnel. About five minutes later, he suffered an apparent seizure and was provided medical aid by jail medical staff. Houston Fire Department personnel responded and transported Simmons to St. Joseph Medical Center at the above address. Doctors pronounced him deceased about 11:20 p.m. Investigators are awaiting results of an autopsy in this case. As is customary in in-custody death incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit. JFC/VHS 2-22-24 Inc #026124324
