Beginning at 8:45 a.m. TOMORROW (Saturday, March 5), officers with the Greater Houston Police Activities League (GHPAL) will host a basketball tournament for area children across the city of Houston.
The tournament will be held at Fonde Community Center at 110 Sabine Street. The basketball tournament marks the end of practices for students across the city of Houston learning the rules of basketball and practicing after school every week.
HPD will be joined by our community partners: Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD), the Houston Rockets, Academy Sports + Outdoors, McDonald’s, KBR, Albemarle Corporation and BHP Petroleum.
The program introduces youth to the game of basketball in a fun and safe environment. The participating youth are a combination of GHPAL and HPARD members actively engaged in current programs. The youth learn some of the fundamental skills essential to playing the game of basketball with the ultimate goal to help youth develop leadership skills and discover strength through physical activity and wellness.
The Greater Houston Police Activities League (GHPAL) is a youth engagement program sponsored by the Houston Police Department. Our mission is to reduce juvenile violence and crime through relational policing by building trusting relationships between youth, law enforcement and the community. GHPAL utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to help create trust and understanding between police officers and youth by bringing them together in a fun and active environment. All youth are provided access to free GHPAL programs throughout the calendar year. Youth are referred to GHPAL through schools, city park personnel and outside agency recreation centers.
