Commercial Building Fire in The Westwood Area

WHAT: Commercial building fire.

WHEN: January 17, 2024, at 8:59 a.m.

WHERE: 9605 Southwest Freeway, 77074.

INJURIES: Deceased civilian found.

PROPERTY SAVED: Not available.

DAMAGE: Not available.

CAUSE: Under investigation.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Firefighters arrived on scene within a minute and found smoke coming from a commercial building with a transformer sparking. Traffic control and CenterPoint were requested. Crews forced entry and located the fire in the attic space. They made an offensive attack and ventilated the roof. A primary search was completed and when conditions appeared to worsen, firefighters were ordered out of the structure and made a defensive attack. Several additional HFD units were requested, and the fire was controlled using aerial operations.

Once the fire was stabilized, crews re-entered the building and found a deceased individual. HFD Arson investigators were requested to determine the cause and origin. 57 personnel responded to this incident, including firefighters from Stations 73, 2, 28, 68, 83, 10, 48, 51, 60, 69, 82, 76, 80, 37, 57 and Rehab 17.
