BARC Seeking Adopters for Pets Seized from Hoarding Situation

HOUSTON – On Saturday April 30, 2022, BARC, the City of Houston’s Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, is finally able to release 30 cats and 5 dogs for adoption.  These special animals have been at BARC since they were rescued from a hoarding situation in September 2021. Area residents are encouraged to take advantage of this weekend’s reduced adoption fees and give these pets a forever home.

The animals were seized last fall from a hoarding situation at a northwest Houston home. The animals were unavailable for adoption, pending the results of a court decision. In April, a judge awarded the animals to BARC. BARC, as part of the Harris County Animal Cruelty Task Force, led the initial cruelty investigation and has been caring for many of the pets at its facility.

“We’re incredibly grateful to our dedicated shelter team and the many volunteers who have helped feed, socialize, clean, and provide top-tier care for these pets during their more than seven-month stay at BARC,” said Greg Damianoff, Director of BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions. “Now that BARC has been awarded custody of these animals, we are excited to introduce them to the public as well as to our dedicated network of rescues, fosters, and volunteers. Please, any interested adopters, visit our adoption center at 3300 Carr Street this weekend from noon to 5 p.m. We want to find safe, new homes for these patient pets!”

Members of the Harris County Animal Cruelty Task Force (HPD’s Major Offenders Animal Cruelty Unit and BARC’s Animal Enforcement team) were on site to conduct the animals’ seizure in September 2021. More than 100 animals were found living in the home in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. BARC is grateful to our partners at the Houston Humane Society for assisting us in housing and caring for a portion of the seized animals.

BARC is now seeking adopters and potential fosters to help rehome these pets. BARC will be reducing adoptions fees April 30 – May 1 in recognition of National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day:

  • $10 adoption fees for adult dogs
  • $20 adoption fees for cats and kittens
  • $75 adoption fees for puppies

In addition, BARC, in partnership with BISSELL Pet Foundation, aim to “Empty the Shelters” by sponsoring reduced adoption fees from May 3-15, 2022. For the 2022 spring campaign, BARC will offer $10 adoption fees for all pets.

To meet these and other adoptable pets, stop by BARC’s Adoption Center at 3300 Carr St. from 12 – 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday or visit http://www.houstontx.gov/barc/adopt_a_pet.html to see our adoptable pets.
