Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed male suspect by HPD officers at 14427 Alrover Street about 11:40 a.m. on Sunday (March 3).
The identity of the male, 45, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Sergeant C. Onwuka and Officers N. Leon and E. Datu, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in the incident. Sergeant Onwuka and Officers Leon and Datu were sworn in as officers in November 2007, August 2021 and September 2019, respectively and are assigned to the Southwest Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeants E. Wohlgemuth, F. Lee and Detectives V. Lewis, C. Walker and M. Estep reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a robbery-in progress call at a convenience store in the 3300 block of Fuqua Street and were advised a male suspect, armed with a pistol, had verbally threated multiple customers at the store. The suspect took a bottle of wine from the store as he displayed his weapon. Officers then received information the suspect was last seen on Alrover Street.
Officers drove to the location and made contact with the suspect, who was sitting on a bench and holding a firearm. Officers attempted to persuade the suspect to drop the weapon, but he refused. The suspect then walked toward officers with the firearm and raised it in the direction of officers. The three officers discharged their duty weapons and the suspect was struck. Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the suspect deceased.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
