ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes to find a first-floor apartment unit on fire, spreading to the unit above it. They made an offensive attack and extinguished the fire. The roof was ventilated, and the utilities were secured. A tenant had been frying food when the grease caught fire. When they attempted to extinguish the fire, it spread throughout the apartment. Crews from Stations 23, 20, 45, 41, 44, 53 and Rescue 42 responded to this incident.
If you attempt to extinguish a kitchen fire it is best to use a class ABC multipurpose fire extinguisher. Baking soda can also smother the fire. If the fire has not burned for more than fifteen seconds, it may still be possible to turn the burner off and use a tight fitting lid to smother the fire, but only if the fire is still small and has not spread beyond the pan.
