Apartment Fire in The Greater OST / South Union Area

WHAT: Apartment Fire.

WHEN: July 18, 2022 at 11:42 a.m.

WHERE: 5110 Griggs, 77021.

INJURIES: One civilian transported to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

PROPERTY SAVED: $16,490,000 in estimated property saved.

DAMAGE: $10,000 in estimated damage.

CAUSE: Unintentional (abandoned or discarded materials or products).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Firefighters arrived on scene to find light smoke coming from the sides of a 4-story apartment building. Heavy smoke was found on the third floor and crews made an offensive attack. They checked extension and conducted a primary search with no one found. The fire was in a wall next to an elevator maintenance room and crews secured the power to the nearby units. Upon investigation they found multiple cigarette butts scattered and determined that the fire was caused unintentionally by a discarded butt that fell into the base of the wall and trimming. HPD was requested for traffic control. One patient was transported to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation. Firefighters from Stations 46, 17, 23, 26, 25, 35, 40, 55, 37, 24, Rescue 42 and Rehab 17 responded to this incident.
