Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a male that occurred at 2406 Charles Road about 11:45 p.m. on Thursday (August 15).
The male, Jose Luis Campos, Jr., 41, was pronounced dead at the scene.
HPD Officer J. White, who discharged his weapon during the incident, was not injured. Officer White was sworn in as an HPD officer in March 2017 and is assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives R. Lujan, J. Brown and J. Villareal reported:
About 11:10 p.m., patrol officers responded to a welfare check call at the above address. Upon arrival, the officers observed Mr. Campos, Jr. standing in the middle of the street holding a handgun. Officers gave Campos verbal commands in an attempt to have him drop the weapon. Instead, Campos raised the weapon to his head and told officers they would have to shoot him. He then fired his weapon. Officer White, fearing for the safety of himself and his fellow officers, discharged his weapon one time.
Officers then rendered first aid to Campos until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived.
As is customary in officer-involved shootings that occur within the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division.
