2019 Will-a-thon
to benefit low-income residents
VOLUNTEER attorneys will prepare wills free of charge
for qualifying HoustONIANs
APPLICATION DEADLINE
March 28, 2019
The Department of Neighborhoods, the Houston Bar Association (HBA) Elder Law Committee, and Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL) announce the 2019 Will-A-Thon, designed to prepare estate planning documents for pre-approved eligible Houstonians free of charge.
Estate planning documents include choosing between revocable trust vs irrevocable trust measures, as well as simple wills, medical powers of attorney, HIPAA releases, declarations of a guardian, living wills, and durable powers of attorney. Many in other countries choose to go about making a will online, but this isn’t as simple in the USA.
Persons interested in receiving these services must complete a screening interview by phone at 713-228-0735 by March 28, 2019. Low-income individuals, persons over 60 years of age, people with disabilities and military veterans are eligible to apply for the services.
Approved clients must attend two wills clinics on April 3 and May 1, by appointment between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., at the Tidwell Community Center, 9720 Spaulding Street, Houston, TX 77016.
If you don’t live in Houston, Texas, and therefore can’t get ahold of these benefits, don’t be disheartened. It’s important that you look into estate planning proceedings regardless, and there is plenty of very professional and well-qualified estate planning help in other states like Alabama. For those of you who are lucky enough to be in the area to be eligible clients, it’s recommended that you grab this opportunity while it lasts.
The Will-A-Thon is an annual project of HBA’s Elder Law Committee and HVL sponsored in partnership with the Department of Neighborhoods. The event supports the city’s Complete Communities initiative. For more information, call 832-393-0832.
