2-Alarm Apartment Fire in The Spring Branch West Area

WHAT: 2-alarm apartment fire.

WHEN: April 30, 2023 at 1:06 a.m.

WHERE: 1207 Cedar Post Ln. 77055.

INJURIES: One firefighter and one civilian transported to the hospital.

PROPERTY SAVED: $25,000 in estimated property saved.

DAMAGE: $75,000 in estimated damage.

CAUSE: HFD Arson investigators ruled the cause as accidental (cooking).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Firefighters arrived on scene within eight minutes to find smoke and fire coming from a 2-story apartment building with a report of people trapped. One resident was found with an injury sustained while escaping and was transported to the hospital. A second alarm was requested, and crews made an attack on the fire while a search was completed of all the units and nearby apartment buildings. The building was ventilated, and the fire was controlled and extinguished. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for possible dehydration. HFD Arson investigators determined that a grease fire while frying chicken, was the cause of the fire. Crews from Stations 5, 50, 69, 2, 4, 28, 78, 38, 49, 57, 66, 69, 77, 6, 60, 15, 8 Heavy Rescue 11, Rehab 18 and the Village Fire Department responded to this incident.

More than 50 percent of cooking fires involve cooking with oil or grease. It is always best to prevent a fire than to have to deal with one. Use a moderate cooking temperature, do not overfill the container, and if you must leave the kitchen, turn the burner off.
