Vacant Structure Fire in The Independence Heights Area

WHAT: Vacant structure fire.

WHEN: May 9, 2024, at 8:48 a.m.

WHERE: 4200 block of Airline Dr. 77022.

INJURIES: One firefighter transported to the hospital.

PROPERTY SAVED: Not available.

DAMAGE: $200,000 in estimated damage.

CAUSE: Under investigation.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Firefighters arrived on scene to find fire coming from a vacant business structure. The building was opened as crews made an attack on the fire and protected the nearby exposures. The ceiling began to sag, and the firefighters exited the structure to make a defensive attack. The roof eventually collapsed. HFD Hazardous Materials was requested due to possible chemical water run-off. The water was tested and was cleared / negative. Several additional units were requested, and crews rotated until the fire was controlled and extinguished. HFD Arson investigators were requested to determine the cause and origin. One firefighter was transported to the hospital. 63 personnel responded to this incident, including crews from Stations 15, 31, 34, 9, 11, 13, 58, 30, Hazmat and Rehab 8 and 17.
