UPDATE: Suspect Arrested, Charged in September Fatal Shooting at 9430 Concourse Drive

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a woman found at 9430 Concourse Drive about 11:40 p.m. on September 4.

The suspect, Daniel Vargas Cartagena, 30, is charged with capital murder in the 337th State District Court.  A photo of Cartagena is attached to this news release.

He is accused in the killing of Maria Flores, 37.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Holbrook and Detective R. Lujan reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call at an apartment complex at the above address and found an unresponsive female in a walkway.  She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the female, later identified as Ms. Flores, deceased.

A preliminary investigation indicated Flores was seen walking with the suspect, described only as a Hispanic male, just prior to the shooting.  Surveillance photos of the suspect with Flores were publicly released on September 5.

Further investigation identified Cartagena as the suspect in this case.  Today (Nov. 21), Cartagena was arrested by members of the Texas Department of Public Safety in Karnes County, Texas.  He is awaiting extradition back to Harris County.
