UPDATE: Suspect Arrested, Charged in March Fatal Shooting at 1855 Wirt Road

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 1855 Wirt Road about 7:45 a.m. on March 16.

The suspect. Arnol Higinio Cruz Garcia, 33, is charged with murder in the 180th State District Court.  A booking photo of Cruz Garcia, courtesy of  the Brevand County Sheriff’s Office, is attached to this news release.

The victim is identified as Jose Hernandez-Cortez, 33.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant K. Persad and Detective L. Yasin reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call at the apartment complex at the above address and found an unresponsive male with an apparent gunshot wound inside an apartment.  Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the male, later identified as Mr. Hernandez-Cortez, deceased.

An initial investigation developed a person of interest, identified as Cruz Garcia, and a photo was released to the public on March 17.

Further investigation identified Cruz Garcia as the shooter in this case. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and, on April 16, a murder charge was filed.

Cruz Garcia was located in Cocoa, Florida and arrested without incident by the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force with assistance from the Florida Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force.  Cruz Garcia is awaiting extradition back to Harris County.
