Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a woman at 7001 West Gulf Bank Road about 1:40 a.m. on January 20.
The suspect, Wydell Dupree Jones, 57, is charged with murder in the 488th State District Court and possession of a controlled substance in the 174th State District Court. A booking photo of Jones is attached to this news release.
The victim is identified as Maria Ramirez, 59.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant A. Dudley and Detective K. Heaverlo reported:
Ms. Ramirez and a passenger were in Ramirez’s car stopped at the intersection of West Gulf Bank Road and North Houston-Rosslyn Road. It is believed a shot was fired from inside another vehicle, described as a silver Ford F-150 pickup truck. Ramirez was struck. Her female passenger, 55, was not injured.
Ramirez’s vehicle then rolled through the intersection, over a curb and into a parking lot, where it struck a dumpster. Passing motorists stopped to provide assistance and called 9-1-1. HPD patrol officers and Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and Ramirez was pronounced deceased.
At that time, there was no known suspect description.
Further investigation identified Jones as the suspect in this case. Officers with the HPD North Patrol Division Crime Suppression Unit arrested Jones on Tuesday (January 30) without incident. He was questioned by detectives, transported to the Harris County Jail and subsequently charged in the shooting and for felony drug possession.
