UPDATE: Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 243 Julia Street

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash that occurred at 243 Julia Street about 3 p.m. on Saturday (September 30).

The suspect, Jesus Natividad Gutierrez, 43, is charged with failure to stop and render aid in the 179th State District Court, and filing a false police report in Harris County Criminal Court #5.  A booking photo of Gutierrez is attached to this news release.

The victim is identified as Robert Jones, 29.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. James and Officer C. Vargas reported:

The male, a United States Postal Service employee, was driving a postal truck southbound in the 8100 block of Bauman Road.  The driver of a white Ford Expedition was behind the USPS truck and, as the postal truck attempted to make a left turn onto Julia Street, the Expedition attempted to go around it.  The Expedition struck the back left side of the postal truck, which then spun and flipped over.  The driver of the postal truck was ejected.  The driver of the Expedition fled the scene without provided medical assistance.

Witnesses provided assistance to the postal employee until Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the male, later identified as Mr. Jones, to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.  Officers spoke with witnesses at the scene and obtained a vehicle description and immediately searched the area but were unable to locate the vehicle or the driver.

Further investigation identified Gutierrez as the suspect in this case and, on Tuesday (October 3), he was arrested without incident.
