Houston police have learned the identity of a male suspect fatally shot by members of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) at 8500 East Freeway (East Interstate Highway 10) service road about 5:55 p.m. on Wednesday (August 29).
The deceased male is identified as Jalon Johnson, 17.
Two DPS troopers and a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy discharged weapons in the incident. They were not injured.
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Officers R. Gonzalez, M. Glover and D. Hobson reported:
Members of DPS and HCSO had been conducting a lengthy robbery investigation. During surveillance, units found a vehicle stolen in a carjacking in Humble the previous day. Units followed the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop at the above location. The suspect struck and damaged two police vehicles during the stop. When the suspect acted erratically by ramming the vehicle into the police vehicles, three law enforcement officers, in fear of their lives and safety, discharged their weapons into the vehicle.
DPS and HCSO members safely cleared the vehicle and observed the suspect was struck at least one time. The law enforcement officers called for paramedics and began to administer CPR. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the suspect deceased on the scene.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
