Charges have been filed against two suspects arrested in an officer-involved shooting incident at 5803 Bellaire Boulevard about 12:25 a.m. on Monday (Feb. 13).
One suspect, Darius Emon Hicks, 21, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 176th State District Court and evading arrest in Harris County Criminal Court # 9. A booking photo of Hicks, who is hospitalized, is not available at this time.
The other suspect, Tra Sean Scott, 20, is charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in the same district court and evading arrest in the same criminal court as Hicks. A booking photo of Scott is attached to this news release.
Hicks sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.
The officer who discharged his duty weapon, E. Bettinger, was not injured. He was sworn in as an HPD officer in September 2011 and is assigned to the Midwest Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant E. Wohlgemuth and Detectives J. Kosler, C. Walker and D. Escobar reported:
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle at the above address when the driver (Scott) pulled the vehicle over. He and another suspect (Hicks) ran from the vehicle. Officers pursued the suspects and could see one of them (Hicks) with a pistol in his hand. One officer discharged his duty weapon and struck Hicks in the leg. Officers provided first aid to Hicks and paramedics transported him to the hospital for additional medical treatment.
Four other suspects in the vehicle were detained, questioned and released without charges.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
