Charges have been filed against two armed suspects in a shooting incident involving Houston police officers at 8360 Park Place Boulevard about 1 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 1).
The male suspect, Alexis Otoniel Martinez, 17, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 482nd State District Court. A booking photo of Martinez, who remains hospitalized, is not available at this time.
The juvenile female suspect has been referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities on aggravated assault against a public servant charges. Juvenile suspect identities and booking photos are not releasable.
HPD Senior Police Officer R. Benavides and Senior Police Officer F. Jaimes, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in the incident. Officer Benavides and Officer Jaimes were sworn in as an officers in September 1994 and January 2013, respectively and are assigned to the Eastside Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives K. Vu and M. Childs reported:
HPD patrol officers were dispatched to a suspicious person with a weapon call at an apartment complex at the above address. Upon arrival, officers were notified by the property manager that two individuals were observed entering a vacant apartment. When officers entered the apartment, one suspect pointed a weapon at them. Officers retreated away from the door and gave the suspects verbal commands to surrender. The suspects ignored all commands and discharged their weapons at officers.
The officers returned fire, striking one suspect. The suspect, later identified as Martinez, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center. The juvenile female suspect was also transported for minor injuries.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and both suspects were subsequently charged for their roles.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
