Suspect Charged, Wanted in May 2020 Man’s Death at 5818 Schevers Street

Charges have been filed against a suspect wanted in the death of a man at 5818 Schevers Street about 5 p.m. on May 3, 2020.

The suspect, John Grant (b/m, 56), is charged with injury to elderly-serious bodily injury in the 339th State District Court. He is accused in the death of Clifton Barber, 65, who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

A 2019 booking photo of Grant, who is not in custody at this time, is attached to this news release.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives P. Pak and C. Flora reported:

Mr. Barber was a resident of an unlicensed boarding home at the above address.  On May 3, 2020, Barber was transported to an area hospital in a private vehicle by one of his acting caretakers.  While on the way to the hospital, Barber became unresponsive and the driver pulled over to call 9-1-1.  Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported Barber to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

An autopsy conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences determined Barber had multiple signs of trauma to his entire body.  He also had an unknown injury to his left wrist, which became infected.  Examiners determined this wound subsequently caused Barber’s death.

Further investigation and witness statements determined Barber had been physically restrained in a chair by his wrists and feet on multiple occasions.  Grant, who was an acting caretaker at 5818 Schevers during Barber’s stay, was developed as a suspect.  HPD homicide detectives reported their findings to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences and Barber’s cause of death was determined to be a homicide.

Homicide detectives then met with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and Grant was subsequently charged for his role in Barber’s death.  A warrant has been issued for Grant’s arrest.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of John Grant, or in this case, is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stopper’s at 713-222-TIPS.
