Charges have been filed against an armed robbery suspect who fired shots at Houston police officers and was then shot by one of the officers at 7600 Airport Boulevard about 1:25 a.m. today (January 11).
The male suspect, Danielle Pope (w/m, 28), is charged with six felony counts: two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, three counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and one count of felon in possession of a weapon. All charges are filed in the 174th State District Court. A booking photo of Pope, who is hospitalized, is not available at this time.
The HPD officer who discharged her duty weapon, E. Camacho, was not injured in the incident. Officer Camacho was sworn in as an HPD officer in July 2018 and is assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant P. Buttitta, G. Rodgers and Detectives J. Harnett, M. Millington and S. Martinez reported:
HPD patrol officers received information regarding a robbery/carjacking call in which a male suspect stole a black Mercedes 300 from victims at a gas station near the South Sam Houston Parkway service road (Beltway 8) and Telephone Road. A victim told police the suspect pointed a pistol at persons inside the car and forcibly removed them from the vehicle.
An HPD sergeant patrolling the area located a black Mercedes matching the description of the stolen vehicle and attempted to catch up to it, along with other officers. Officers caught up to the vehicle after the suspect struck a curb, disabling the vehicle. Knowing the suspect was armed, officers drew their duty weapons and gave the suspect repeated verbal commands to show his hands. The suspect exited the vehicle with a pistol and fired multiple shots at officers. No one was struck. One of the officers discharged her duty weapon and struck the suspect, causing him to drop his weapon and fall to the ground. Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the suspect to the hospital in serious, but stable condition.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
