Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in an incident in which the suspect was wounded by a Houston police officer at 7121 Cullen Boulevard about 12:25 a.m. on May 29.
The suspect, Steven Champion (w/m, 27), is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer in the 230th State District Court.. A booking photo of Champion, who remains hospitalized, is not available for release at this time.
Officer S. Guille who discharged his duty weapon, suffered a head injury and was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released. Officer Guille was sworn in as an officer in July 2019 and is assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigations Division Sergeant R. Bass and Detectives M. Millington, L. Lopez, S. Martinez and J. Hartnett reported:
Officer Guille observed the driver of a green Toyota Avalon commit several traffic violations at the above address and initiated a traffic stop. As Officer Guille made contact with the occupants of the vehicle, a male suspect, later identified as Champion, approached Officer Guille multiple times and interfered with his investigation. Officer Guille gave Champion repeated requests to leave the scene and witnessed him walk away from the parking lot.
A short time later, Champion returned to the scene and approached Officer Guille from behind while carrying a 36-inch metal pipe. Nearby witnesses attempted to warn the officer as Champion violently swung the metal pipe and struck Officer Guille in the head. Officer Guille managed to create distance between him and Champion and, fearing for his safety, drew his service weapon. Champion continued to advance on Officer Guille while swinging the metal pipe. Fearing for his safety, Officer Guille discharged his duty weapon, striking Champion. Officers immediately provided first aid and then took Champion into custody. HFD paramedics transported him to the hospital in where he remains in stable condition.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
