Charges have been filed against a suspect involved in a shooting incident with Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers that occurred at 1600 Brittmoore about 7 p.m. on Thursday (April 26).
The suspect, William Bernard Landers (w/m, 46), is charged with felony evading in a motor vehicle and three counts of aggravated assault on a public servant in the 337th State District Court. A photo of Landers would have to be obtained from the charging agency, the HCSO.
Two HCSO deputies and five DPS troopers discharged their duty weapons. None of the deputies nor troopers was injured in this incident.
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Senior Police Officers J. Villareal and R. DelaRosa reported:
HCSO deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 17900 block of the Eastex Freeway (North U.S. Highway 59) on a vehicle driven erratically by Landers. Initially, Landers pulled his vehicle over and spoke with the deputy, who found that Landers was wanted on felony warrants. Landers then fled in his vehicle and led HCSO and DPS on an approximate 50 minute pursuit. The pursuit ended in the 1700 block of Brittmoore where Landers then rammed a citizen’s van and two DPS vehicles. Five DPS troopers and two HCSO deputies discharged their duty weapons at the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect was not hit and most of the shots hit the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody after officers deployed their conducted energy devices (CEDs).
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents occurring in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
