Suspect Arrested, Charged in Shooting Incident at 111999 East Freeway

A suspect who fired shots at a Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy (HCSO) at 11199 East Freeway (Interstate Higway 10 East) service road about 6 p.m. on Monday (April 19) has been arrested and charged.

The suspect, Alejandro Quintana (H/m, 19), has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and felony evading arrest in the 185th State District Court. *A request for his booking photo would have to go to the HCSO.*

The deputy who discharged his weapon was not seriously injured in this incident and suffered minor cuts and scrapes from the altercation.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant R. Flores and Officers J. Turner, R. Anders and A. Hurtado reported:

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service – Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force were conducting surveillance on Alejandro Quintana, who was wanted for multiple felony warrants. They observed Quintana leave a Harris County location in a black vehicle and alerted HCSO deputies to initiate a traffic stop. As deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, Quintana fled. After a short pursuit, Quintana stopped his vehicle on the freeway and fled on foot.

An HCSO deputy pursued the suspect on foot to a hotel located at the above address. As Quintana was running, he told the deputy he had a gun. The deputy then created distance as the suspect ran through a breezeway and stopped just before exiting the breezeway. A witness alerted the deputy that Quintana was crouching behind a vehicle. As the deputy exited the breezeway, he could see Quintana behind the vehicle. The deputy gave Quintana verbal commands, at which time Quintana began firing shots at the deputy. The deputy, fearing for his life and responding to the suspects shots, returned fire. A brief exchange of gunfire ensued until Quintana ran out of ammunition and surrendered.

Quintana was not injured as a result of the gunfire and was taken into custody without further incident.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit.
