Suspect Arrested, Charged in Shooting at 4702 Ennis Street

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the shooting of a man at 4702 Ennis Street about 11:25 on January 30.

The suspect, Efrem Zimbalist Clark, 28, is charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury in the 337th State District Court.  A booking photo of Clark is attached to this news release.

The victim, Cornell Mathis, 41, was transported to an area hospital in stable condition with non life-threatening injuries.  A second male victim was present but did not suffer a gunshot wound.

HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Detectives V. Garcia and C. Johnson reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting at the above address and found Mr. Mathis suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Mathis and another male (second victim) were working security nearby. They observed a male assaulting a female and intervened. The suspect threatened to obtain a firearm and a short while later, someone shot at them from an an unknown vehicle, striking Mathis.

Further investigation identified Clark as the suspect in the case. On March 10, Clark admitted to the shooting from his silver Chevy Camaro. He was subsequently charged for his role in the shooting.
