Suspect Arrested, Charged in Shooting at 3800 Mount Pleasant Street

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the shooting of a woman at 3800 Mount Pleasant Street about 6:55 a.m. on Monday (May 2).

The suspect, Jared Earl Simmons, 23, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 232nd State District Court.  A booking photo of Simmons is attached to this news release.

The victim, Genesis Strawder, 18, was transported to an area hospital and later released.

HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Detective C. Grahmann reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to an assault call at the above address and witnessed Simmons shoot into a crowd, striking Ms. Strawder in the leg.  Houston Fire Department paramedics transported Strawder to an area hospital in stable condition.

Investigators learned Simmons was involved in a dispute with his roommate.  During the dispute, a family member of the roommate came to the apartment and threatened Simmons with a gun.  Simmons assaulted the family member and took the gun.  He then fired shots into a crowd, striking Strawder.

Officers detained Simmons at the scene. He was subsequently arrested and charged in the incident.
