Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the shooting of a man at 2025 Broadway Street about 11:40 p.m. on February 7.
The suspect, Zachary M. Smith, 31, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a weapon in the 232nd State District Court. A booking photo of Smith is attached to this news release.
The victim, Jimmy Alvarado, 40, was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.
HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Sergeant V. Garcia, Jr. and Detective D. Crandall reported:
Mr. Alvarado and another man, 44, were in their tow truck and pulled into a car wash at the above address. Alvarado exited the truck and saw another vehicle pull up. Alvarado was immediately confronted by a masked, armed male suspect, who ordered Alvarado not to move. As Alvarado reached to grab his own firearm, the suspect shot him in the abdomen. Alvarado returned fire, but the suspect was not struck. The suspect then jumped into the passenger seat of a gray SUV and fled the scene. Paramedics transported Alvarado to the hospital.
The other man in the tow truck chased the SUV until the suspect vehicle came to a stop in the area of Crestmont Street and the South Loop East (South Interstate Highway 610 East) service road. At that time, the man fired shots and struck the vehicle, but not the suspect. The man was able to provide to responding HPD patrol officers a description of the suspect vehicle and its last known location.
Officers in the area located the suspect vehicle with bullet holes in the rear and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle refused to stop and evaded police. At that time, officers initiated a vehicle pursuit, followed by a brief foot pursuit, during which the driver of the vehicle was arrested with assistance from HPD K-9 Ares. The suspect, identified as Zachary Smith, was charged with felony evading and aggravated assault of a public servant for ramming an HPD officer’s car.
As the investigation into the shooting incident was continuing with Smith being the possible suspect, he was subsequently released on bond.
On February 22, Smith was arrested again on unrelated felony charges. Further investigation into the shooting on Broadway led to charges being filed on Smith on Sunday (March 6) for his role in Alvarado’s shooting.
