| Charges have been filed against a suspect involved in a shooting incident with a Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constable that occurred at 10333 Richmond Avenue about 4:05 p.m. last Friday (Sep. 22).
The suspect, Jackson Lee Miles (b/m, 56), is charged with felon in possession of a firearm and felony evading in a motor vehicle in the 232nd State District Court. A photo of suspect Miles is not available for release at this time.
The deputy involved in this incident was not injured.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Officers M. Glover and N. Krupa reported:
The suspect, Miles, was observed to be wandering through the 9th floor of the Community Bank Building at the above address. When he noticed he was being watched, he went to the corporate offices of “Lupe Tortillas,” on the 2ndfloor of the building. Once there, an employee confronted him after catching him going through her purse. Miles then immediately left the building.
The employee notified a building security guard of the attempted theft. The security guard searched outside the building for the suspect and found a Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constable, who was preparing to work an extra job directing traffic, and notified him of the incident.
About 10 minutes later, the deputy saw the suspect walk to a red pickup truck parked in the building parking lot. The Precinct 1 deputy constable, along with a Harris County Precinct 7 deputy constable, approached the suspect. The suspect got into the pickup truck and attempted to flee, however he was prevented from leaving by the deputy constables. The suspect then reversed the pickup truck at a high rate of speed and then drove toward a second parking lot exit. The deputies again attempted to prevent him from leaving. As the suspect drove toward the deputies, the Precinct 1 deputy constable, fearing for his safety, discharged his duty weapon more than once toward the suspect, but did not strike him.
The suspect then crashed his vehicle and fled on foot. Both deputies pursued him on foot behind the back of the building and took him into custody. There were no injuries in this incident.
A semi-automatic pistol was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle.
As is customary when a law enforcement officer discharges his weapon at a suspect within the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit.
