Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of an off-duty Harris County Precinct 4 Constable deputy at 8800 Richmond Avenue about 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 3).
The suspect, Athir Samir Murady, 40, is charged with murder in the 337th State District Court. A Galveston County Sheriff’s Office booking photo of Murady is attached to this news release.
The victim has been identified as Maher Husseini, 50, a corporal with the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeants N. Miyako, A. Lopez, K. Persad and Detectives C. Bowling, L. Gonzalez and N. Sharp reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting at the above address and found a man with multiple gunshot wounds seated in the driver’s side of his personal vehicle at a stop light. Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the man, later identified as Corporal Husseini, to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
An initial investigation, witness statements and collaboration of multiple area law enforcement agencies identified a suspect vehicle involved in the shooting and a description was broadcast to surrounding agencies. The vehicle was located by law enforcement in Galveston, Texas. Following a brief pursuit, the suspect, identified as Murady, was arrested by several area law enforcement agencies. The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office has charged Murady with felony evading arrest.
Further investigation determined Murady was responsible for the fatal shooting of Corporal Husseini. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and Murady was subsequently charged with murder. Murady remains in the Galveston County Jail, awaiting extradition to Harris County.
