Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 12187 Sagedowne Lane

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 12187 Sagedowne Lane about 4:40 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 5).

The suspect, Jose Luis Vargas, 26, is charged with murder in the 351st State District Court.  A booking photo of Vargas is attached to this news release.

The identity of the victim, 50, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives D. Higgs and C. Bowling reported:

Officers responded to a shooting in-progress call at the RV Park at the above address and found a witness in possession of a gun the witness had taken from the shooter.  The witness directed officers to the suspect (Vargas), found waiting nearby.  Vargas was detained and taken into custody.

Detectives learned the victim, witness and Vargas were drinking together when a physical altercation between the witness and the victim ensued. The altercation had been resolved and the witness was about to walk away when Vargas fired at least one shot, striking the victim.  The witness took the gun from Vargas and called police.  Paramedics pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

Following consultation with members of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, charges were filed against Vargas.
