Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of two women and for firing shots at Houston police officers at 1015 East Tri Oaks Lane about 9:15 a.m. on Sunday (June 20).
The suspect, Lewis Trinidad Nunez (H/m, 46), is charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer and murder in the 351st State District Court. A booking photo of Nunez, who is hospitalized, is not available for release at this time.
Officer H. Tran, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured. Officer Tran was sworn in as an HPD officer in June 2012 and is assigned to the Northwest Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Ynosencio and Officers T. Vaca, N. Alvarado, V. Nguyen and C. Walker reported:
Officers received a call regarding a domestic disturbance at an apartment at the above address. As officers arrived, a female ran to the front door of the apartment where the 911 call came from. A male opened the door and shot the female at close range, in front of a responding officer. The officer who witnessed the shooting exited his vehicle and ordered the male suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect then fired shots at the officer and the officer returned fire, striking the suspect several times. The suspect closed the door of the apartment and barricaded himself inside.
SWAT officers were called to the scene. The suspect later surrendered and was taken into custody. Paramedics transported him to a hospital.
As officers entered the residence, they located a second woman (daughter) deceased inside. The first female (mother) also succumbed to her injuries. No officer was injured during this incident.
It was later determined that the suspect was the boyfriend of the female found inside the apartment.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
