Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 800 Southwest Freeway

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 800 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) about 1:40 a.m. today (June 23).

The suspect, Eduardo Umana Cordona, 25, is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the 179th State District Court. A booking photo of Umana Cordona is attached to this news release.

The identity of the deceased male victim, 42, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Alejandro and Officer J. Johnson reported:

Umana Cordona was driving a red Kia Sorrento the wrong way (eastbound) on the freeway at the above address when his vehicle collided head-on with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling westbound.  The impact caused a fire.  Firefighters and paramedics arrived and pronounced the motorcyclist deceased.

Paramedics transported Umana Cordona and a male passenger, 25, to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Umana Cordona was determined to be intoxicated, treated at the hospital and then transported to jail.  The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was consulted and charges were subsequently filed against him.
