Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 6800 Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) about 3:05 a.m. today (Nov. 22).
The suspect, Omar Jose Alvarado, 23, is charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter in the 228th State District Court. A booking photo of Alvarado, who is hospitalized with injuries sustained in the crash, is not available at this time.
The identities of the deceased female victims, 46 and 8, are pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Fendia and Officer N. Duval reported:
The adult female victim, a Harris County Precinct 5 Constable deputy, was working an extra job as traffic control for construction work on the outbound (westbound) lanes of the freeway at the above address. The deputy was in her vehicle, a white Chevrolet Impala with its emergency light bar equipment on, in the far right lane and providing cover behind the crew. The deputy also had a juvenile female family member as a passenger in her vehicle.
Alvarado was driving a gray Mazda 3 westbound on the freeway when he struck the constable deputy’s vehicle (Chevrolet) from behind. The forceful impact caused the Chevrolet to burst into flames. The deputy and child were pronounced deceased at the scene. A female passenger, 25, in the Mazda, was transported to an area hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Further investigation determined Alvarado was impaired. He was questioned at the scene and transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Following his release from the hospital, Alvarado will be taken to the Harris County Jail.
