Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 4500 East Loop

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 4500 North Loop (North Interstate Highway 610 East) that occurred about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday (May 15).  

The suspect, Pedro Diaz-Cruz, 84, is charged with failure to stop and render aid in the 209th State District Court.  A photo of Diaz-Cruz is attached to this news release.

The identity of the male victim is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant P. Pham and Officer T. Phillips reported:

The victim was walking on the main lanes of the East Freeway when Diaz-Cruz, driving a red Chevrolet Lumina on the northbound lanes of the East Freeway, struck the victim.  A second vehicle, a black Chevrolet Silverado then also struck the victim.

Diaz-Cruz initially stopped but then drove away.  An off-duty Harris County Precinct 1 Deputy Constable followed Diaz-Cruz to his residence at 12900 Barcus, where the deputy detained the suspect and called HPD.  The driver, 23, of the Silverado remained at the scene and was questioned and released.  Neither driver was found to be intoxicated, however, Diaz-Cruz was subsequently charged for leaving the scene of the crash.  .
