Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 4400 North Freeway

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 4400 North Freeway (North Interstate Highway 45) about 3:15 a.m. on Thursday (February 6).

The suspect, Monica Rosenda Valdez, 32, is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the 497th State District Court.  A booking photo of Valdez, who remains hospitalized, is not available at this time.

The deceased victim is identified as Steve Nartey, 56.

Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Griffiths and Officer J. Johnson reported:

Valdez was driving a black Ford F-150 pickup truck the wrong way, northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway at the above address, and struck a gray Jeep Cherokee and a white Toyota Camry.

Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the Jeep’s driver, Mr. Nartey, deceased.  The driver of the Toyota was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Valdez was transported to an area hospital for treatment.  She was determined to be intoxicated and was subsequently charged for her role in this crash.  Following her discharge from the hospital, she will be transported to the Harris County Joint Processing Center.
