Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 1300 North Freeway

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash that occurred at 1300 North Freeway (North Interstate Highway 45) about 2:15 a.m. today (March 18).

The suspect, Juan David Almanza, 36, is charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxicated assault in the 228th State District Court.  A booking photo of Almanza is attached to this news release.

The identity of the male victim, 54, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Uribe and Officer J. Hill reported:

The driver (victim) of a white Ford Mustang, with a female passenger, was traveling southbound on the North Freeway when his vehicle was struck by a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by Almanza, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the North Freeway.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  His female passenger, 48, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in an unknown condition.  Almanza was transported to St. Joseph's Medical Center in an unknown condition.  He was determined to be intoxicated and subsequently charged for his role in the crash.
