Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 10500 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) service road about 12:15 a.m. on Monday (June 13).
The suspect, Yasmir Reyes, 28, is charged with murder and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury in the 230th State District Court. A booking photo of Reyes, who is hospitalized, is not available for release at this time.
The identity of the deceased male victim, 23, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. A female, 16, was transported to an area hospital with multiple fractures.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Rose and Officer J. Baker reported:
Officers attempted to stop a black Ford Mustang in the area of the PlazAmericas Mall for a traffic violation. The suspect driver (Reyes) refused to stop and drove southbound on the Southwest Freeway service road followed by the marked HPD patrol vehicle with emergency equipment activated. Reyes ran the red light at the intersection with the West Sam Houston Parkway South service road (Beltway 8) and struck a white Chevrolet Malibu traveling eastbound on Beltway 8.
Paramedics were called to the scene and pronounced the Chevrolet’s driver deceased. A female passenger in the Chevrolet suffered multiple injuries and was transported to a hospital where she remains in serious, but stable condition.
Investigators learned the Chevrolet was operating as a ride share vehicle at the time of the crash.
Reyes sustained a broken leg and was transported to a hospital where he is in police custody. Upon his release, he will be taken to jail.
