Suspect Arrested, Charged in Crash at 13000 Northwest Freeway

A suspect has been arrested and charged following a crash that injured an HPD officer and one other person at 13000 Northwest Freeway (State Highway 290) service road about 5 a.m. today (June 6).

The suspect, Eric Yovanni Ventura, 27, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and intoxicated assault with serious bodily injury in the 482nd State District Court.  A booking photo of Ventura, who remains hospitalized, is not available at this time.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant L. Ross and Officer C. Nguyen reported:

An HPD sergeant, conducting a traffic stop in a black Ford Explorer parked on the roadside, had stopped the driver of a red Kenworth T680 18-wheeler pulling a box trailer. As the sergeant sat inside his patrol vehicle and the 18-wheeler driver stood outside—on the right of the trailer and in front of the police vehicle—a black Ford Fusion failed to control its speed and struck the rear of the Explorer.

The Explorer was pushed into the rear of the box trailer, striking the trailer and the driver of the 18-wheeler.  The HPD sergeant had to be extricated from his vehicle by responding Houston Fire Department paramedics.  The HPD sergeant and the drivers of the 18 wheeler and Fusion were transported to area hospitals.  All three suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Ventura, the driver of the Fusion, was found to be intoxicated. He was subsequently arrested and charged for his role in the crash.
