Beginning January 9, 2022, BARC, the City of Houston’s Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, and Houston PetSet, a nonprofit with the mission to end the homelessness and suffering of companion animals, are partnering to offer free spay/neuter surgeries for the pets of City of Houston residents.

“For many reasons, Houston has long had a problem with stray animals. To address the overpopulation issue at its core, we must establish strong collaborations with partners like Houston PetSet,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “I commend the staff at BARC for proactively continuing its strategic, targeted approach to reducing Houston’s pet overpopulation, and I thank Houston PetSet for making this new initiative possible.”

“Houston PetSet is excited about this collaboration with the city of Houston,” says Tama Lundquist, Houston PetSet Co-President. “With thousands of homeless pets in our streets and moving through our shelters, it’s important to provide this resource to the community. We know that the service is not only needed, but wanted. The response to preliminary announcements has been overwhelming. We know that working together makes us more efficient and more effective. Spay and neuter is a big part of solving the animal homelessness crisis in Houston, and we look forward to adding more programs with the city in 2022.”

About Houston PetSet

Houston PetSet was initially founded in 2004 as a granting organization, raising thousands of dollars each year to distribute among local animal welfare organizations. In the last decade the organization has grown significantly in scope. They offer tens of thousands of dollars in emergency funds annually to rescues who take in severe cruelty or medical cases, and serve as a convener of resources to the organizations and fosters who are caring for these animals. Additionally, Houston PetSet runs an interstate transport every other week throughout the year, with thousands of dogs and cats getting the chance to find homes outside the state of Texas annually. Other programs include a year-round mobile spay/neuter bus that offers free surgery, vaccines and microchips to underserved communities, and Pet Protect, a free pet boarding service for survivors fleeing domestic violence situations.
